ATTACKING IRAN IS NOT THE ANSWER!
Iran is not a direct threat to the United States. Yes, its government is supporting insurgents in Iraq. Yes, it is funding terrorism in Lebanon and Palestine. Yes, it is against Israel, and hostile toward the United States, and yes, it controls half the world's oil supply passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Yes, it is trying to enrich uranium, and it may even built an atomic bomb, several years down the line.
But war is not the answer.
America's forces are stretched too thin. The Pentagon has warned the president that attacking Iran would be foolhardy. Four or five generals have threatened to resign in the event of an attack. Members of Congress have voiced their objections and are launching efforts to restrain the President's War Powers. They need our support.
The consequences of war on Iran could be catastrophic:
• Iran could immobilize our fleet in Hormuz and block the flow of oil to the West, raising oil prices to $100 or more per barrel, and potentially devastating the global economy.
• That means everything you buy at the store will cost MORE.
• Since a land invasion is impossible, the use of nuclear weapons is likely.
• Even without nukes, bombing Iran's nuclear facilities will release radiation that will travel all the way to India, causing a million or more immediate deaths and millions of new cancer cases throughout the region, and beyond. We already endure a CANCER EPIDEMIC as a result of releasing the nuclear genii from the bottle in 1945 and engaging in a very COLD war for decades.
• Use of nuclear weapons will normalize nuclear war, and fill the atmosphere with radioactive fallout. Global nuclear war could result.
• War on Iran will unify terrorists and lead to terrorist attacks on US troops throughout the region and here at home. Martial law might be the result, initiating a dark era of checkpoints, ID cards and other restrictions on our rights.
WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER!! What's the answer?
• Face the global emergency &endash; the spread of nuclear weapons, mounting nuclear waste, rising temperatures and dangerous weather, shrinking water supplies, new diseases, dwindling resources, all the result of the kind of POWER POLITICS and GRAB-GRAB-GRAB economics that we see in play in the world today.
• Call together all the world's leaders to turn their attention to this crisis and work together to solve it. Collaboration, not war, is the only way out of this crisis.
• BRING WOMEN TO THE PEACE TABLE. Women's desire to preserve the world for our children overrides the SURGE FOR POWER that characterizes male leadership.
WAYS TO OPPOSE A WAR ON IRAN
Do all the usual things: Call your Congressperson! Write letters to the editor! email this page to your friends. TALK ABOUT IRAN. Talk about ways to end all wars.
AND....
Support Congressional opposition to the war!
Senator Jim Webb is considering introducing a resolution declaring that Bush has no authority in present law to launch a war on Iran. Encourage him to do so!
Representative Walter Jones, R-N.Carolina, has introduced HJR 14 declaring Bush's lack of authority to launch a war, backed by 28 members. Encourage your representatives to support this measure.
Representative Ron Paul, R-Texas, has begged President Bush, "Don't bomb Iran!" Support Ron Paul.
